Distance recap from first week of competition:
The first week was an interesting one and exciting to see where we were after a brutal winter that made it difficult at times to train consistently, including 6 practices that we’ve now missed due to cold days, hazardous roads, and a water main break. Despite the comparatively (to last two years at least) awful conditions, we are looking great for early indoor.
A number of our athletes have already posted personal bests in their respective races, not to mention some of our more seasoned runners, while not getting PRs, are starting well ahead of where they were a year ago.
Some of the highlights so far include:
Jacob Amiri running 4:30 pretty much solo at York for a new 1600 personal best and now the 4th fastest time CE. Realistically, we weren’t as surprised or impressed by that as we knew he is pretty fit, but the fact that he came back 15 minutes later to split a 53 in the 4x4 has us pretty excited for the 800 this weekend at Proviso West. Sub 2 shouldn’t be a problem. If he’s pushed, we could see a new school indoor 800 record as well.
Joey Eterno is also off to a good start. He ran 10:30 in the 3200 at York to move onto the top 10 soph list at #7. Three days later, he comfortably won the 1600 at the Little Four Invite clocking 4:57 after leading off the winning Soph. 4x8 earlier in a PR of 2:13. His 1600 on Meet the Team Night got him the #10 spot on the Soph. 1600 list.
Peter Fish ran an impressive 4:50 to rank him #7 on that list at MTTN. He was sick for York and still not 100% but managed to anchor our winning 4x8 in 2:16 and doubled back for a solid 2nd place in the 600.
David Fish started the season very well winning the 3200 at York. He ran most of the 16 laps completely alone and still managed to crack the 10 minute barrier with a 9:59. That puts him #10 on the 3200 list, but expect that ranking to continue dropping as the season progresses. We’ll see how he does at Proviso with some competition pushing/pulling him along. He should be eyeing a new PR by running in the 9:40s.
Perhaps the athlete that has come on the strongest thus far is Jason Shaughnessy. Jason put in a solid fall of training in CC and it’s paying dividends. He was running in the 2:20s indoor last year and gradually got down to around 2:12 outdoor. He started with a 2:08 at York and an impressive 55.7 4x4 split at HC. He has already posted lifetime bests this year in the 400, 600, and 800… and it’s been a week.
On Friday night at the Little Four Invite we had many other notable performances.
Max O’Meara posted a 2:13 split on winning soph. 4x8.
Brandon Hutton ran PRs in 800 and 600: 2:21/1:38
We took the top four spots in the 3200. Austin Rutkowski won the race followed by three Mustangs making their 3200 debut. Tim Arnold was 2nd, followed by Freshmen Grant Lester and Jacob Bullard.
Will Heatherington was on winning 4x8, placed 3rd in the 600, and also ran a leg on the winning 4x4.
Sayuj Shah ran a great race and lifetime best in 800 to win F/S open race.
Last but not least, Trevor Smith ran a 9 second PR in 1600 to place 2nd in the F/S open race with a 5:19.
This weekend will see all the Mustangs back in action at least once. We’ll be hosting a triangular meet with Neuqua Valley and Sandburg Friday evening. The following morning we’ll be off to the Proviso West Invitational to face some very strong competition. Lets keep up the hard work Mustangs!
