Mustangs Wrap up Regular Season
Thursday, October 8 2015 - Downers Grove South vs Willowbrook and Hinsdale SouthThe Mustangs finished up there regular season on Monday with nice wins against both Hinsdale South and Willowbrook on the F/S level, while defeating WB and losing to HS on the varsity level. DGS elected to hold out the top 8 runners to keep fresh for workout the following day and avoid potential injury from racing hard only two days after racing at Lockport. WB held out some of their top guys as well whereas Hinsdale South ran their full roster (as it worked better with their current schedule and training cycle). While Charlie Nodus of HS stole the show with his course record time of 14:57, DGS quietly had many outstanding performances of their own.
The top finishers for the Mustangs were Zack Wascher and Akhil Ghosh who were 6th and 7th overall. Both ran personal best times, covering the 3 mile course in 16:41 and 16:43 respectively. Their toughness really stood out as they battled with the varsity pack from HS. In fact, although our duo is generally our 9-10 runners, they managed to finish in front of Hinsdale's 6th on Monday. Marc Alvarez was the next runner for DGS with a 17:12 followed closely by Rylan Dreyer who had a huge pr finishing in 17:19.
To put into context the extent to which the Mustang team has improved this year, in comparing times from our opening home meet with Morton and Leyden where we ran all of our guys (that were healthy), we would have lost on Monday 27-28 to our top 5 varsity guys at the outset of the season. On Monday, the top 5 was entirely different and would've only lost by a point, a testament to both our team's improvement and our impressive depth at this point in the season.
One of the biggest takeaways from the meet on Monday was just how much we've improved... and we still have weeks to go!
Wascher was -1:15
Ghosh -1:26

Overall, despite the loss to HS, it was an exceptionally good day for the Mustangs. We certainly relish the opportunity to race them again soon at the WSC Gold Conference Meet on the 17th. DGS will have everybody ready to roll that day and are excited for a great matchup against HS and the rest of the tough WSC Gold Division.
Go Mustangs!
