Two Top-Five Team Finishes for Eagles at CPL Championships, Three Individual Titles

Thursday, May 11 2017 - Chicago Public League Championships - Arthur Santoro

Kicking off the 2017 post-season, the Eagles reentered the top-five at both levels of the Chicago Public League, as the frosh-soph team placed third and the varsity team placed fifth at last weekend's CPL Championships hosted at Hanson Stadium.

Scoring 59 points in mid-distance and distance events alone, the sophomore team placed in the number three spot for the third time since 2014, continuing to show their strength in those events.  The varsity squad also rebounded from a disappointing finish last year to crack the top-five, their best showing since 2013.

The Eagles also boasted three individual champions on the day, along with three runner-up performances.  Completing the sweep in the frosh-soph 3200m run, sophomore Alex Fundator and freshman Ryan DeSantis combined for a tactical '1-2' finish respectively, making them the fifth pair of Jones runners in the last seven years to complete the sweep in the 3200m run.  Fundator also becomes the sixth Jones runner to win the race in the last seven years.

Becoming Jones' other Frosh-Soph City Champion was freshman Ian Bacon who put another accomplishment on his young resume, adding to his Freshman Cross Country City Title with a victory in the 1600m run.  Bacon also added his name to the record board the following Tuesday with a new freshman school record in the event, clocking a 4:35.3 at the Palatine JV Twilight Distance Classic.

On the varsity side, Arthur Santoro continued his successful senior year campaign scoring eighteen individual points and securing three All-City recognitions for the second year in a row.  The Knox College bound middle distance specialist took home his first varsity City Championship with a commanding win in the 400m dash to follow-up his runner-up finish in the 800m run.  Santoro also led the 1600m relay team to an 8th place All-City finish.
