Maida, Two-Mile Relay Team Crowned City Champions

Tuesday, May 7 2019 - Chicago Public League Championships - Anthony Maida

With the regular season officially in the books for their 2018-2019 campaign, the Eagles opened up their varsity post-season schedule in impressive fashion on Saturday, taking home fourth place in the team race behind the efforts of only nine athletes in six events to finish one point shy of the third spot.

Jones went two-for-two in individual titles to start the day, as the two-mile relay team of Jeremy Yakes, Ian Bacon, Michael Villa and Baito Sarkiss combined to set the tone with an impressive win in 8:19.66.  Led off with a big three-second personal best from Yakes, both Bacon and Villa followed up with 'PR' splits of their own, while Sarkiss closed the deal with a season best time on the anchor.

Not to be outdone, junior Anthony Maida carried the momentum into the 3200m run, recapturing the crown for the Eagles as he broke the field over the final three laps to secure his first individual title.  Teammate Ryan DeSantis followed close behind in a strongly executed race to nab All-City honors with a fourth place crossing.

Both Sarkiss and Villa would also add their second All-City honor of the day by doubling back in the 800m run to earn the final scoring spots in the event.

In the 1600m run, Maida completed the distance double with a third place finish, while senior captain Alex Fundator finished one spot behind, earning both upperclassmen All-City recognition as well.

To cap the day off, Bacon returned from his time-leading leg on the distance relay to wrap up an impressive day on the track with a 'PR' and team best split in the one-mile relay as well, leading the quartet of Fundator, Liam Reynolds and Sarkiss to the Eagles' eighth All-City honor of the weekend.  It also marked Sarkiss' third individual recognition of the afternoon.

The championship season will continue for Jones this weekend with the second half of the Sophomore Chicago Public League Championships before moving on to the IHSA Sectional Championships the following week.
