DGS Defeats Morton

Friday, October 7 2016 - Downers Grove South vs Morton

Monday saw the team race in sadly our only home contest of the year and the final regular season meet. Matching up against one of our traditional rivals, Morton, we got our final opportunity for a tune-up prior to next Saturday's WSGC Championship Meet.

With both school "resting" a handful of their varsity runners, an opportunity afforded itself to other athletes to step up and lead the way. As the gun went off, DGS immediately went to the front, aggressively taking control of the race. The early leader was Rylan Dreyer, followed closely by teammate Ben Laurich. Zack Wascher, Marc Alvarez, Luke LaLonde, and Luke McGrath were close on their heels. Much like at Lockport, by the midway part of the race LaLonde had moved to the lead and looked to extend on it over the last mile. Lockport saw Luke run out of gas on the homestretch fading to 3rd (our of 400+), however, on Monday he looked strong all the way through the finish securing the 13 second victory.

After Luke, 5 straight DGS runners finished before Morton's first. Wascher was 2nd, Alvarez 3rd, Dreyer 4th, McGrath 5th, and freshman John Heneghan was 6th with a nice PR of 17:37. Two other freshmen, John Norris and Canyon Stage were close behind in 8th and 9th.

Overall, we really showed off our impressive depth this year as we had 14 of the first 15 and 18/21.

With the victory on Monday, DGS completed the WSGC regular season with a perfect record on all levels, ready to take on the entire conference next Saturday with the TEAM goal of winning all four races on the day.
