DGS Runs well at LT

Saturday, September 1 2012 - Lyons Twp Invite

This was a great day of debuts for the Mustangs.

While we had many fantastic performances this week at the Lyons Twp. Invite, it was the newcomers to DGS CC that took the spotlight.

Leading the way for the Mustangs overall was Cross Country newcomer Jacob Amiri who placed 20th in the Varsity race in 16:02.  In the Sophomore race, Drew Heneghan led the way, breaking 17 minutes for the first time with an impressive 16:59 to finish 12th.  Only two spots back in the Soph. race was Freshman Alan Zhou who ran an impressive effort of 17:11, which is the fastest Freshman time in the past six years (and probably more).  It’ll be exciting to see how he can run when he doesn’t run 144 in the pacer the day before a race!

Also putting forth a nice performance in the Sophomore race were Ethan Kirk, Mike Fogarty, Steven Rotunno, Nick Grazier, and Danny Annese.  This crew has been working hard and logging some serious miles since last fall and all turned in impressive lifetime best performances.  Also mixing it up with that group was newcomer and Normal West transfer Tim Arnold who ran a lifetime best of 18:25 in his first race as a Mustang.  The Sophomore team managed a very respectable 5th place team effort, and were only 24 points out of 2nd.

In the JV race, while we did not have any newcomers, we did put forth a very solid 4th place performance.  Dan Reeter led the way for the Mustangs with his 34th place finish in 18:09, followed closely by Taylor Enke who ran a nice PR of 18:19.  Matt Tureson, Alex Hartig, and Rob Perkins rounded out the top 5 as they all came in close together.

Obviously, the Freshman race was filled with new runners to DGS Cross Country.  As a team, they placed 6th out of 12 in the competition, but were only 19 points out of 3rd place and garnering a team award.  Zach Scheffel led the way with his 26th place performance (11:49), followed closely by Jack Lalonde in 29th (11:57).  The Mustangs continued to file in closely together with Chris Lippi (12:08), Stan Smid (12:16), Kevin Fera (12:18), Michael Mugnolo (12:23), and Austin Rutkowski (12:35) making up the top 7 for DGS.  The 29 second spread from our 1st to our 5th was really the key to a nice team performance.

Next weekend the Mustangs travel to Peoria for the “First to the Finish” Invitational contested on the State Meet course at Detwiler Park.
