PRs at Proviso for the Mustangs

Saturday, February 23 2013 - Downers Grove South vs Proviso West

The Mustangs struggled as a team to score points at the prestigious Proviso West Invitational earlier today, but that certainly did not mean that we had an off day.

Throughout the meet, DGS athletes competed hard and came away with personal bests.

The long day started off well with a great team effort by our Freshmen 4 x 800 meter squad.  Peter Fish led us off in a PR of 2:17, followed by Max O'Meara making his season debut as the #2 leg throwing down an impressive 2:13.6 (which makes the Freshmen top 10 list of the past 6 yrs. in his first race).  Luis Marquez ran a gutsy leg as the third runner with a 6 second PR of 2:24.  Will Heatherington brought it home for the Mustangs who placed an impressive 8th against a mostly Sophomore field.

Next for the distance crew was the 3200, which has been a bright spot for the team early on.  In the F/S race, Josh Realubit dropped 6 secs. off his PR to break the 11 minute barrier in 10:58.  Representing DGS in the Varsity 3200 were Freshman Alan Zhou and a late addition, making his season debut, Sophomore Ethan Kirk.  Both PR'd with times of 10:48 and 10:53 respectively.

Proviso is one of few meets where they actually run the full mile in lieu of the typical (shorter) 1600m.  Ryan Strelau went out aggressively and held on for an 8 second PR of 5:19.  In the varsity race, Jacob Amiri ran a near perfect race for about 1300 meters but ran out of gas in the last 300.  He was with the leaders for most of the race, sitting on Scott Milling from York (All-State CC and Footlocker National Qualifier) before fading to a still respectable 5th in a time of 4:36.  A great effort for only his 4th 1600/mile ever!

The Mustangs will have a short respite before competing on Monday at one of the marquee meets of the indoor season.  DGS will host the Mustang Relays at North Central College on Monday with events starting at 6 pm.
